School supply distribution event to be held Saturday at Miracle Temple Church

New London – Miracle Temple Church is hosting its seventh annual Back to School Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Jennings Elementary School on Mercer Street.

The event, which will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers book bags, school supplies and services to New London County students who are getting ready for the new school year.

Last year, 700 bags filled with supplies were distributed and more than 2,000 people were helped. This year, the organizing committee expects to distribute 1,500 bags and serve more than 3,000 people.

The day will start with welcoming remarks from Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio followed by comments from Laurelle Texidor, principal at Jennings.

Miracle Temple also has partnered with other organizations, including New London’s College Access Program, The Drop-In Learning Center, Child & Family Agency, Rotary Club, United Community & Family Services, Sound Community Services and New London Youth Affairs.

The Back to School Block Party was started in 2007 in response to the growing need of children who were starting school without the tools to succeed.

The event is free and open to the public.
