Norwich sex offender admits to third probation violation

Convicted sex offender Shannon M. Skidgel admitted today in New London Superior Court that he had violated the terms of his probation for the third time since he was sentenced in 2002 for molesting two young girls.

Skidgel, 29, of Norwich, was charged in March with hitting his three-year-old son in the face, leaving a bruise that the child’s day care providers noticed and reported to police. The child told the daycare provider, “Daddy did this,” according to prosecutor Lawrence J. Tytla. The child is now in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.

Skidgel “does not agree” that he abused the child, according to his attorney, Peter D. Catania, but admitted to the probation violation. He was sentenced to an additional 120 days in prison, which he has already served while his case was pending.

Skidgel’s initial prison sentence was fully suspended after he successfully completed a sex offender program. He was put on strict probation for 10 years and required to register as a sex offender.

He served additional prison time for violating his probation in 2008 and 2012.

“You’re doing your sentence on the installment plan,” Judge Susan B. Handy told him. “You’re going to end up doing the whole sentence if you don’t come into compliance.”
