State funds could be put to better use

Having read a recent piece in your publication about both East Lyme and Old Lyme receiving half-million-dollar grants, "Infrastructure grant awarded to EL, OL," published Aug. 1, it was nice to find that East Lyme used its money for the betterment of the whole town and its many visitors. They used the grant to repair the train bridge, boardwalk and storm-damaged beaches. Old Lyme, on the other hand, used its money for improvements to the boat house at Rogers Lake.

I've been going to Old Lyme for than 50 years and have been a summer resident for eight. I never knew that there was a boat house at Rogers Lake. It's nice that there is one, and it should be taken care of, but is there not a better way of spending state funds than on a boat house that only serves a few, rather than the majority?

There is a blight problem in the beach areas, abandoned buildings that are falling down. And there is a need to bolster beach patrols to stop the drinking on the beach and the mess that goes along with it. The toilets in the town parking lot are an eyesore and become unsanitary on heavy beach days.

My point is, there are more important things that can be done with "found" money in Old Lyme.

Let's use our money where it counts.
