Newly elected Montville ZBA member resigns

Montville — Within two days of being re-elected to his position on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Republican Gregg Bassetti has resigned.

In September, attorney Jon Chase sent a letter to the Zoning Board of Appeals that said Bassetti and fellow board member Tom McNally were not qualified to be on the board because they were town employees when they ran for the office.

At that point, it was too late for Bassetti to remove his name from the ballot. He was elected on Tuesday with the second-highest number of votes in a four-person race to fill two seats on the board.

Bassetti was sworn in on Wednesday and then resigned, said Town Clerk Lisa Terry.

McNally, a newly elected town councilor and chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said the Republicans have nominated Joseph Aquitante III to fill Bassetti's seat. The confirmation of his nomination is on the agenda for the Nov. 13 Town Council meeting.

Aquitante ran to fill a vacancy on the Board of Assessment Appeals but lost to Democrat Ann Mattson.

McNally has resigned from his position on the Zoning Board of Appeals because of his election to Town Council and said the party is still looking for a replacement.
