Water damaged half the rooms, lobby of Hampton Inn in Mystic

Mystic — A broken sprinkler line on Sunday badly damaged more than half the 92 rooms and the lobby of the Hampton Inn & Suites on Route 27.

Stonington Building Official Wayne Greene, who inspected the hotel following Sunday morning’s incident, said Monday that the pipe broke in the attic causing a large amount of water to cascade down the three-story hotel. He said wiring, electrical fixtures, sheetrock, ceilings and rugs will all likely have to be replaced and the hotel cleaned before it can reopen. Greene said 29 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and those guests were relocated.

It is unclear when the hotel will reopen or how much monetary damage occurred as a hotel official ordered a Day reporter off the property Monday afternoon and refused comment.
