Weather forecasters are warning of the possibility of black ice forming after midnight as temperatures fall below freezing.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for southern New London and Middlesex counties, among other areas.

The falling temperatures will cause residual water from Wednesday’s rain to freeze, resulting in hazardous travel on untreated surfaces, according to the statement. This is especially true of sidewalks, parking lots and driveways.
