Five nonprofit organizations will receive state grant money for various building improvements, repairs and equipment through the $20 million state Nonprofit Grant Program announced by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Thursday.

The grants come under a new state law approved last June to improve the "efficiency, effectiveness, safety and/or accessibility of health and human services being delivered by nonprofit organizations," a press release from the governor's office said.

The program was designed to invest in nonprofit providers that have contracts or agreements with state agencies.

"Partnering with these organizations is a smart fiscal investment to ensure that these agencies can continue to provide services while doing so in an efficient, cost-effective way," Malloy said making the announcement at Chrysalis Center, a provider agency in Hartford. "This is the largest commitment our state has made to support and invest in these community-based organizations that provide critical services to individuals in every city and town in our state."

Statewide, 81 nonprofit agencies in 38 cities and towns received grants through the new program. Local programs receiving funding are:

Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, $29,500 for fire escape replacement, $45,500 for new windows.

Safe Futures Inc., $69,080 for improvements and $43,975 for roof replacement.

Reliance House, $28,550 for improvements and $30,000 for bathroom renovation at Smith Avenue, Norwich facility.

United Community and Family Services, Norwich, $100,000 for generator.

Whole Life Inc., Bozrah, $100,000 for generator.
