Rains flood out Norwich apartment building

Norwich - Four people were forced out of a flooded apartment building, and a portion of Corning Road was washed out during this morning's heavy rain, Emergency Management Director Gene Arters said.

Several city streets were flooded, along with "dozens and dozens" of basements, Arters said.

Four residents of an apartment house on Hiilcrest Road spent much of this morning at the city's emergency shelter at the Kelly Middle School. Arters said power had to be shut off at the house. The shelter closed at noon, and the residents planned to go to a hotel.

Mohegan Park Road at the Mohegan Village Apartments also was flooded, along with a section ofRoute 12/North Main Street.

The flood-prone Yantic River spilled over its banks in places and flooded Fireman's Field behind the Yantic Fire Engine Co. Station.

At the ShermanStreet bridge, Norwich Public Works and Public Utilities crews brought in a backhoe to remove two large trees that fell at the Yantic River edge. Arters said the tree removal was a precaution to prevent the trees from becoming wedged under the bridge, where natural gas and sewer lines are located.
