    State Senate, House debates to be hosted by The Day, Eastern Connecticut Chamber

    The Day and the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut are collaborating to host a series of debates across the region in state Senate and House races. Also assisting in this effort will be the League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut.

    The debates will be one hour long, open to the public and available for later viewing on theday.com. Audience members will have a chance to submit questions in writing. The chamber and The Day are also seeking questions online from their members and readers.

    Paul Choiniere, editorial page editor of The Day, will moderate most of the debates. A majority of candidates have committed to participating. If you are running for legislative office and have not yet confirmed your appearance in a debate, please contact Choiniere at (860) 701-4306 or p.choiniere@theday.com.

    All the debates begin at 7 p.m. Some venues will include two debates, one immediately following the other.

    The schedule:

    Sept. 10, Preston Veterans Memorial School, 42nd House District: Rep. Tim Bowles, Democrat, and Mike France, Republican.

    Sept. 16, Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School, 23rd House District: Mary Stone, Democrat, and Devin Carney, Republican; followed by 33rd Senate District: Sen. Art Linares, Republican, and Emily Bjornberg, Democrat.

    Sept. 23, Public Library of New London, 39th House District: Rep. Ernest Hewett, Democrat, and Andrew Lockwood, Republican.

    Oct. 1, Groton Public Library, 40th House District: Rep. Ted Moukawsher, Democrat, and John F. Scott, Republican; followed by 41st House District, Rep. Elissa Wright, Democra,t and Aundré Bumgardner, Republican.

    Oct. 6, East Lyme Public Library, 37th House District, Rep. Ed Jutila, Democrat, and Elbert M. Burr, Republican.

    Oct. 8, Charter Oak Credit Union Headquarters, 1055 Hartford Turnpike, Waterford, 20th Senate District, Betsy Ritter, Democrat, and Paul Formica, Republican.

    Oct. 22, Slater Auditorium at Norwich Free Academy, 46th House District, Rep. Emmett Riley, Democrat, and Robert Dempsky, Republican; followed by 19th Senate District, Sen. Cathy Osten, Democrat and Steven Everett, Republican.

    Oct. 29, Waterford Public Library, 38th House District, Marc Balestracci, Democrat, and Bill Collins, Green Party, and Kathleen McCarty, Republican.

    Oct. 30, Stonington Community Center, 18th Senate District, Sen. Andrew Maynard, Democrat, and Kevin Trejo, Republican.
