Town Receives Big Grant to Fight Drugs

Madison has received a $625,000, five-year federal grant to support the Madison Alcohol and Drug Education Coalition.

"This is very good news," First Selectman Fillmore McPherson said.

Youth Services Director David Melillo said the town had previously been funded for five years, but to get the money again was "very rewarding."

The town has seen positive results from the program as a statewide survey found that marijuana use in Connecticut was increasing, but in Madison it was decreasing, Melillo said.

The grant will help the coalition focus on teaching about the dangers of alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs and reducing the access to these drugs, such as by doing underage drinking checks.
