Workshop on organic farming to be held at Conn College

New London — CT NOFA (the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut) will host a workshop titled “Getting Started in Organic Farming” from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 at Connecticut College.

The conference is intended to educate new and transitioning organic farmers as demand for locally produced organic foods is on the rise, NOFA said in a news release. The workshop will offer information about agricultural practices, marketing, planning and management. Attendees will have access to valuable support and resources as well as opportunities to interact with experts and established farmers, and they can connect with other beginning farmers from their area.

The 2015 lineup includes presentations from Crystal Stewart of Cornell Cooperative Extension; Patrick Horan of Waldingfield Farm; Ed and Belinda Learned of Stonyledge Farm; Kip Kolesinskas of the University of Connecticut Extension Service, Kathy Ruhf of Land For Good; Duncan Cox of Baystate Organic Certifiers and Lynn Weaver of Farm Credit East. Topics will include organic farming and the age of the “locavore” movement; holistic farmland management; basics of livestock raising and infrastructure; getting started in organic certification, access to quality land and keys to financial success in organic farming.

Lunch will be provided. Registration is $40 for CT NOFA members and students and $50 for non-members. Connecticut College students can attend for free by signing up through the college’s Office of Sustainability by emailing sustainability@conncoll.edu or calling (860) 439-5068.
