Garden club receives award for excellence

Mary Cooper, left, chair of civic development for the North Stonington Garden Club receives an award from an official of the Connecticut Federated Garden Club.

The North Stonington Garden Club was honored by the Connecticut Federated Garden Club at their annual awards meeting Oct. 28 with a Silver Award of Excellence for Civic Development.

The club received the award for its two years of work rebuilding and replanting the gardens in the center of the North Stonington Village after the Shanuck River flooded in 2010. The five-foot surge of the river destroyed the bridge and roads, which had to be replaced, before work could be started on the gardens.

The club funded the project with profits from their annual May plant sale.

The project began in September 2013. Over a period of months, working with town workers and club members, dwarf crabapple trees, small ornamental shrubs and hundreds of daffodil bulbs were planted. The Clock Garden was re-planted as were plantings on the Village Green and the town hall complex. The Garden Club Civic Planting Committee is caring for the gardens. Every member of the club participates in civic planting.
