Haitian students have hot lunch after Matthew thanks to Mystic church

Students at St. Luc School in Mercery, Haiti, enjoy a hot lunch thanks to a partnership with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic. (Rev. Sonley Joseph, Episcopal Diocese of Haiti)

Thanks to a partnership with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic, students at St. Luc’s School in Mercery, Haiti are able to enjoy hot meals.

The school, located 25 miles from the capital Port-au-Prince, reopened Oct. 10 after sustaining some damage when Hurricane Matthew passed over the country. The school serves about 300 students from preschool through seventh grade.

St. Mark’s has partnered with the school since 2008, and parishioners have visited four times to build classroom furniture, deliver school supplies and lead workshops for teachers. The lunch program was started this year after teachers said many students come to school without eating.

St. Mark’s is located at 15 Pearl St. in Mystic.
