Nature center offers programs for school vacation week

Mystic — The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is offering a week of outdoor programs for school vacation week Dec. 26-30.

Programs each cost $25.50 per member, $30 for nonmembers for ages 5-12. Pre-registration is required either online at: www.dpnc.org/calendar or by calling (860) 536-1216.

The morning programs, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will change daily. Afternoon Adventures free play will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. daily. Participants will spend the afternoon outside, hiking, exploring, playing games, building forts, making campfires and roasting marshmallows. If there’s snow, there will be snow-related activities.

    The morning programs are:

    • “Who’s Hibernating?” a program that includes games, crafts, stories and other activities about black bears, chipmunks, and other animals that curl up and sleep away the cold, snowy days.

    • “Active Animals!” a program about animals that stay active all year, even through the winter. Participants will hike through the forest looking for animal tracks, learn about white-tailed deer, turkey, squirrels and other active winter animals.

    • “Hunt for the Yeti,” a program in which participants will read the book “Dear Yeti,” a story about surviving in the winter, then head out on the trails. Participants will learn about the folklore of the Yeti, compare some of the large mammals that live in Connecticut, and learn some survival skills.

    • “Animal Teeth and Beaks,” a program about comparing and contrasting the different teeth and beaks of local animals. Participants will make their own animal jaw (with shells as teeth) to bring home. A nature hike through the winter woods may provide clues to the animal movements (and munching) that goes on around the nature center property.

    • “Animal Detectives,” a program in which participants will search the fields and forests for signs of animal life, including tracks, trails, scat and homes, and visit with some of the nature center’s live animals. Crafts and games will teach about the local animals.

All morning programs will meet at the nature center. Participants should dress for the weather and bring a bagged lunch.
