Four Chaplains Day ceremony held in Taftville
During the Four Chaplains Day ceremony at the Peter Gallan American Legion Post 104 in Taftville on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, honoring four Army chaplains that gave their lives to save others when the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine on Feb. 3, 1943, local clergy (clockwise from left) Rabbi Julius Rabinowitz, Rev. Scott Schuett, Rev. Cathy Zall, and Lt. Col. Father Brian Converse, reenact the four chaplains of the Dorchester linking arms on deck saying prayers and singing hymns as the ship sank.
Rabbi Rabinowitz, is of the Beth Jacob Synagogue in Norwich, Rev. Schuett is of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Rev. Zall is of the First Congregational Church in New London, and Lt. Col. Father Brian Converse is chaplain of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry Regiment and also Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Gales Ferry.
