Coogan Farm tractor “Clara” gets upgrades

Thanks to a grant from the General William Mayer Foundation, Coogan Farm’s Clara will be sporting some new attire this growing season.

The farm’s tractor, named after the late Clara Morgan Coogan, has been outfitted with four new attachments, including a plow and rake. Maggie Jones, executive director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and Coogan Farm, said in a release that the tractor is vital to the farm’s Giving Garden, which grows produce for the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center in New London.

“Now, thanks to the support of the General William Mayer Foundation, these improvements make this tractor even more perfectly suited to our needs,” she said in the release.

The special project grant of $10,000 also funds a new caterpillar tunnel to extend the farm’s growing season; last year it produced more than 15,000 pounds of fresh produce for the food center.

Coogan Farm is located on Greenmanville Avenue in Mystic.
