Rumble strips to be installed along western portion of Route 1 in Stonington

Stonington — The Board of Selectmen has supported a plan by the state Department of Transportation to install rumble strips along the centerline of Route 1 from the borough to Mystic.

The board voted to support the plan at its meeting Wednesday night, one week after the Board of Police Commissioners also supported the plan with the stipulation that the strips not be added to the passing zone just west of Cove Road.

The rumble strips will be installed from North Main Street west to Denison Avenue as part of an upcoming paving project. No strips will be placed along the lines that mark the shoulder of the road.

Rumble strips are raised areas of pavements that create noise and vibration when tires cross over them. They are designed to reduce crashes in which distracted or sleepy drivers cross into oncoming traffic.

The town currently has centerline rumble strips on local roads such as North Main Street from Route 1 to Pequot Trail.
