New London Landmarks to host Jane’s Walk festival May 5

New London Landmarks will participate in the global Jane’s Walk festival on May 5 by hosting three free walking tours inspired by the late urbanist and author Jane Jacobs.

“Last year’s Jane’s Walk was such a success that we’re expanding our Jane’s Walks this year,” Laura Natusch, executive director of New London Landmarks, said in a written statement. “We’re excited to offer three different walks this year, timed so that people can attend all three.”

From 10 to 11 a.m., Maggie Redfern will offer a walk on urban forestry that will start and end at the Public Library of New London. Discussion will touch on everything from places to reintroduce trees and how to care for urban trees to how trees and sidewalks can coexist.

“So much of New London has been paved over, contributing to urban heat islands and stormwater runoff,” said Redfern, the assistant director of the Connecticut College Arboretum.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., New London Planning and Zoning Commission member Ronna Stuller will lead a walk along Broad Street, beginning and ending at Williams Park.

“Jane Jacobs believed that her most important work wasn’t her opposition to urban renewal, but her study of cities’ economic growth,” Stuller said. “I’d like to honor her by using Broad Street’s big box stores and mixed-use buildings as a way of talking about her discoveries.”

From 2 to 3 p.m., Nicole Thomas will take walkers from Williams Park through the Post Hill neighborhood, sharing the history of its houses and prominent residents.

“I’ve researched many neighborhoods in New London as they pique my interest,” Thomas said. “But I always come back to this one because of its beauty and deep history.”
