Waterford library hosts presentation on historic book's electronic edition

Waterford — Surveyor and land historian Gerald Stefon will present his electronic edition of Robert L. Bucher's "The Colonial Lands of New London" at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Waterford Public Library.

Archived in the Waterford Town Clerk's office for more than two decades, Bucher's two-volume manuscript, which includes maps, was mostly available to historians, surveyors, genealogists and title searchers. At his own expense, Stefon scanned and indexed the manuscript in its entirety and donated an electronic copy to the library.

Bucher, also a surveyor and land historian, died in 1992. Waterford Historian and former Town Clerk Robert Nye, who along with other officials extensively relied on Bucher's work, described the manuscript as "the single most important contribution to 17th and 18th century Waterford" since Frances Manwaring Caulkins' "History of New London," first published in 1852.
