Preston Board of Finance seeks to fill vacancy

Preston — The Board of Finance is seeking to fill a vacancy for one regular member to serve until the November 2019 municipal election.

Applicants must be electors and Preston taxpayers. Letters of interest should be addressed to the Board of Finance and received by Friday, June 22. Letters can be submitted electronically to financeboard@preston-ct.org.

The Board of Finance will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. June 28 to interview interested candidates and select a new regular member.

The Board of Finance typically meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in Town Hall. Meetings typically last about two hours. The regular meeting schedule for 2018 and past minutes are posted on the Board of Finance page on the town website, www.preston-ct.org.

The primary responsibility of the board is to make annual budget recommendations to residents and receive budget estimates of income and expenses from the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education. The Board of Finance then compiles a balanced budget and presents it at the annual town meeting.

After a budget is approved, the Board of Finance can approve additional appropriations up to $20,000 and must refer spending requests of more $20,000 to a town meeting, and those over $100,000 must be sent to a referendum.

In addition, the board is responsible for the town's accounting system, preparing the annual town report and providing the annual financial audit.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
