New London firefighters respond to 83 calls over Sailfest weekend
New London — Sailfest proved busy for the New London Fire Department as the department responded to 83 calls over the weekend, 55 of them on Saturday.
Although the calls Saturday were not all related to Sailfest, 55 is a much higher number than what the fire department sees on a typical day. On average, the department responds to between 20 to 30 calls a day, New London Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said.
Nichols also said the vast majority of calls Saturday were for people who had a medical problem — everything from bleeding and cardiac events to people incapacitated by alcohol or suffering from heat-related issues, he said.
Police said officers who were working Sailfest made 17 arrests over the weekend.
