Stonington -- Organizers of last fall’s Bricks and Murals project in downtown Pawcatuck and Westerly are now proposing to install large, outdoor musical instruments that people can play throughout the downtown area.

At last week’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Tim Lebling of Bricks and Murals outlined plans for the Westerly-Pawcatuck Harmony Trail. While selectmen sad the idea sounded interesting, First Selectman Rob Simmons said it was the first time they had seen the project and suggested the group discuss it with Director of Planning Jason Vincent, the town’s Beautification committee and police before returning to selectmen for an official vote of support. In addition, selectmen requested a list of nearby communities where they could see the instruments, which resemble xylophones.

Lebling said the group envisions eight to 12 instruments placed from Grey Sail Brewing Co. south to the Amtrak station, Wilcox Park and possibly both sides of the Pawcatuck River Bridge.

“Everyone we have spoken to has embraced the idea,” he said.

He said the instruments are extremely durable, and at 165 feet produce a noise level of 50 decibels which he categorized as an “inside talking voice.” In talking with other communities which have the instruments, he said they have not received noise complaints.

Lebling said the plan is to raise money to purchase the instruments, which cost $4,000 to $6,000 each, and have them installed for the annual Pops in the Park concert on June 22, 2019.

He added the instruments “will continue to bridge the two communities together as we celebrate the arts.”

Last September, 100 mural and sign artists from across the country, known as the Walldogs, descended on the downtown area and painted 14 historical murals on the sides of buildings.
