New Daisy troop starts up in Pawcatuck
Area kindergarteners have another option to enter the world of Girl Scouts with the formation of Daisy Troop 60566 in Pawcatuck.
Troop co-leader Mary Jo Gentile said she had participated in Girl Scouts when she was in elementary school, and she had started asking about Daisy Scouts last year for her daughter Ava, who was 4 at the time. Once Ava turned 5 and entered kindergarten, however, the closest troop was in East Lyme.
“Another troop leader in North Stonington suggested I become a troop leader,” Gentile said in an email, “so I took a leap of faith and completed the online training and did my own recruiting.”
Only four girls signed up, and Gentile said she was ready to quit when her friend Ali Souza, whose daughter Adelyn was signed up, volunteered to be co-leader. Two more girls signed up, bringing the troop past the five-member minimum, and the six girls were “sworn in” with their Daisy pins.
The troop’s first field trip was Oct. 20 to Stonington Human Services for their Friendly and Helpful petal. They read and discussed a book about those traits, used chalk to illustrate their story on the sidewalk, and helped with weeding at the building’s entrance.
Future endeavors include a food drive for the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, a tour of the Stonington Borough Fire Department and a financial literacy project ahead of the Girl Scouts’ popular cookie sales.
Troop 60566 has spots for six more members. For more information, parents can visit gsofct.org or email Gentile at mjhughes25@yahoo.com.
