Horticulture teacher Karolyn Jordan was recently selected as a recipient of the 2018 Teachers Turn the Key professional development scholarship from the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

She attended the NAAE annual convention in San Antonio in November as part of the scholarship.

The scholarship, sponsored by RAM Trucks, brings together agricultural teachers with two to four years of experience to explore issues specific to early-career agricultural education.

Jordan, who teaches in the agri-science program at Ledyard High School, was recognized for developing her own curriculum, including a new unit on urban agriculture. Students in the unit designed, built and maintained more than a dozen 32-square-foot urban gardens at the school to learn about soil layering, symbiotic relationships and crop rotations.

She was also recognized for her dedication to continued development in the industry, most recently serving as the Connecticut Association of Agricultural Educators’ treasurer.
