    Groton's grand list grows by 1.5 percent

    Groton's 2018 grand list of taxable properties grew by 1.5 percent over the previous year, with the categories of real estate, personal property and motor vehicle all seeing increases.

    The net grand list stands at $3,734,667,321, up from $3,679,211,091 in 2017. The 2018 numbers are prior to the Board of Assessment Appeals process, while the 2017 numbers are after the process.

    Total net real estate grew by 0.3 percent to $3,251,777,985, while the total motor vehicle category increased by 1.6 percent to $205,054,773.

    Personal property saw the largest increase, growing by 17.9 percent to $277,834,563. 

    Tax Assessor Mary Gardner said the growth on the grand list primarily represents recovery from a lawsuit settlement with Pfizer, which was reflected on the personal property category on the 2017 grand list. The settlement pertained to assets that had been denied under the manufacturer’s machinery and equipment exemption program.

    "We also picked up a lot of heavy construction equipment at four/five construction sites around town for the personal property list," she added.

    The overall net assessment of the top 10 taxpayers in town represents 20 percent of the total net adjusted taxable grand list before the Board of Assessment Appeals, the town document states. The top 10 taxpayers are as follows:
