Groton substance prevention group seeks National Prevention Week proposals

Groton — Groton Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (GASP) is seeking proposals from Groton-based youth groups for National Prevention Week projects.

GASP co-hosted the Emerald Ball on Jan. 12 with two other Groton organizations — Community of Hope and Community Speaks Out — to support local prevention, treatment and recovery resources. More than 400 people attended the first annual event. GASP’s goal was to fundraise for a youth-led prevention project for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA’s) National Prevention Week May 12-18.

"Our hope is to engage a Groton-based youth group in creating a multi-faceted project to share throughout the community to raise awareness of the importance of prevention and promote healthy, alcohol and drug-free lives," a news release states.

"Youth groups can be school-based, faith-based or organization-based and should have an adult adviser," the release states. "The groups must have the capacity to complete and implement all aspects of the project and observe National Prevention Week. Projects must have a print element, an audio/video element and a social media element. All participants under the age of 18 must have permission to participate and have a photo/video release signed by a parent or guardian. Details are outlined in the Call for Proposals Application. Applications are due by March 15th."
