Connecticut Landmarks to offer tours Saturday of Forge Farm restoration

Stonington — Connecticut Landmarks will host a community open house of the Forge Farm property on Al Harvey Road from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The organization said it will give a presentation and tour of the current preservation work and its almost completed interior restoration.

“We were fortunate to have a mild winter which allowed us to move forward with the Forge Farm restoration ahead of schedule,” said Patrick Pinnell, the preservation architect who is overseeing the project in a press release from the organization. “The windows have been replaced with historically accurate replicas designed specifically for historically sensitive projects such as this. In combination with the new cedar roofing, Forge Farm is once again serving as an example of early American architecture.”

Connecticut Landmarks was criticized by Forge Farm neighbors and residents last year who said the organization had badly neglected the house despite an endowment of more than $1.5 million. In addition they charged it had made repairs not in keeping with the historic character of the house such as vinyl replacement windows.

In January, the state attorney general's office has found that Connecticut Landmarks did not misappropriate any charitable funds in its stewardship of Forge Farm in Stonington and a historic home in East Haddam.

It added, though, that it would like Connecticut Landmarks to better address the intent of donors and preservation of properties under its control.

The attorney general launched an investigation of the nonprofit organization’s finances after complaints from residents and a series of stories by The Day's columnist David Collins that raised questions about the group’s care of the two homes and its use of endowment funds.

The organization said in its press release that the open house is the culmination of months of planning, work and community outreach. Mike Einsiedel of Yankee Restoration and Remodeling, the contractor responsible for the exterior restoration, is also slated to be at the open house with photos of his exterior restoration work at Forge Farm and on the Palmer-Warner Barn in East Haddam, which is also owned by the organization.

The organization also said the interior restoration of Forge Farm “is intended to maintain and restore period-characteristic features such as the hearths and baking chamber, exposed post-and-beam structure, and wide softwood flooring.”

It said the restoration project is being completed in partnership with a committee of neighbors and residents designated by the Stonington Historical Society.
