MGM Springfield's slots revenue climbed last month

MGM Springfield kept $18.6 million in slot-machine revenue in March, the highest monthly total in its brief history, according to figures released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

The March number surpassed the $18.1 million in slots revenue MGM Springfield kept in September 2018, its first full month of operation and its previous high-water mark. Monthly totals since then had ranged from $13.1 million to $14.6 million.

“March was a very strong month for the property and represented our best slot month since opening,” Michael Mathis, the casino’s president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We recognize in this early ramp up period that results will continue to vary month to month as our operation, programming and customer base stabilizes. ... Beyond the casino, our banquets, entertainment, and retail business have grown and welcomed new customers daily to the resort ...”

MGM Springfield kept 9.14 percent of the total amount wagered on its slot machines in March, the highest so-called “hold percentage” in any month since September.

By contrast, southeastern Connecticut’s casinos — Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun — reported hold percentages of 8.2 and 8.1 percent, respectively, in March. Both casinos reported year-over-year declines in their March slots revenues.

MGM Springfield also kept $7.1 million in table-games revenue in March, raising its total gaming revenue for the month to $25.7 million. It paid 25 percent of the total, or $6.4 million, to the state.

The Connecticut casinos do not report table-games revenue on a monthly basis.
