Pawcatuck church to present Good Friday play for 13th straight year

Stonington — For the 13th year in row, the Lighthouse Community Baptist Church in Pawcatuck will present a play to mark Good Friday.

This year the church will present two performances of “A Light in the Darkness” by Sandi Zimmerman Rebert on Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. In previous years, the church has presented plays written by Lori Jones, the wife of pastor Ray Jones, which have told the story of Good Friday through different perspectives.

“A Light in the Darkness” tells the story of a recently widowed woman and her crippled son who are struggling to survive in 1st century Jerusalem. Without any resources, Rachel and Nathan must figure out a way to pay their inflated tax bill to the mercenary and corrupt tax collector, Malchijah. Rachel’s hope rises when she hears that Jesus, the famous rabbi from Nazareth who has been performing miracles and healing the sick, is coming to Jerusalem. Her goal becomes finding Jesus and asking him to heal Nathan. But that task won’t be as easy, especially with the events surrounding Jesus’ time in Jerusalem.

The play is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted to help offset costs. It is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes in length. Child care will be available for children 6 and under during the 6 p.m. performance only. The church is located at 22 Pequot Trail.
