    Friends and Neighbors: Local students recognized in NESS drawing contest

    Several local elementary students were among the winners in the 2019 New England Science and Sailing Foundation’s annual drawing contest. More than two dozen winning works, based on the theme “Long Island Sound and Its Watershed: What It Means to Me,” will be in next year’s NESS calendar.

    Local students honored include:

    Montville: Katniss Li, Murphy Elementary School, Grade 1, Honorable Mention; Emma Voight, Oakdale Elementary School, Grade 2, First Place; Tiffanie Butler, Murphy Elementary School, Grade 4, First Place; Alexa Tufares, Murphy Elementary School, Grade 5, First Place.

    Preston: Brandon Richey, Veterans’ Memorial School, Grade K, Honorable Mention; Ashelyn Noonan, Veterans’ Memorial School, Grade 2, Honorable Mention; Gianna Lennon, Veterans’ Memorial School, Honorable Mention.

    New London: Jade Mendoza, Harbor School, Grade K, Honorable Mention.

    East Lyme: Alperen Demir, Niantic Center School, Grade 2, First Place; Margaret McKee, Niantic Center School, Grade 3, First Place.

    Lyme: Roger Crampton Jr., Lyme Consolidated School, Grade 1, First Place.
