    Groton — Town officials and guests added their signatures to a 33-foot, 1,000-pound steel beam that was then raised for a topping-off ceremony for the new Groton middle school on Friday at the site on Fort Hill.

    The new school, which will open for the 2020-21 academic year, will consolidate the district's two middle schools into one building. Guests at the ceremony added their signatures to the beam before it was raised into position by workers with Eastern Steel Erectors and Schenectady Steel. Superintended Michael Graner delivered remarks to those gathered before it was raised.
