Quilt honoring artist Ellis Ruley to be unveiled Sept. 6

Norwich — A framed commemorative quilt to tell the story of local artist Ellis Ruley’s life and artwork will be unveiled Friday at Norwich City Hall.

The Ellis Walter Ruley Project Committee will host the unveiling ceremony of the quilt, titled “An Artist at Heart” at 1 p.m. Friday on the second floor of City Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Beth A. Troeger designed the quilt using various sizes of rectangles, which included 14 panels depicting Ruley’s paintings and six panels depicting important aspects of the artist’s life in Norwich. Sashing was designed as a unifying feature, loosely representing a map of the city including the three rivers — Shetucket, Yantic, and Thames — roads, railroads, parks, and pathways.

The quilt project was launched in February 2018 with an invitation to community members to quilt panels. Several quilters completed the panels by June, and Bonnie Doran led the group through the process of completing the project.

The quilt case was designed and created by the 2018-19 Norwich Free Academy Community Design and Project Management class, led by instructor Todd Zagurski.
