Norwich felon pleads guilty to possessing firearm

A convicted felon from Norwich has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm, the U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut announced Tuesday.

Elvin Gonzalez, 38, entered the plea Tuesday before Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport. East Hartford police arrested Gonzalez on Aug. 9, 2018, after he was found with a Charter Arms .44 caliber revolver and marijuana, according to court documents and statements.

As a convicted felon, he is not permitted to have firearms. He has previous state convictions for sale of a hallucinogenic drug or narcotics and escape, as well as a federal conviction for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, for which he was sentenced to 120 months' imprisonment in 2005.

Gonzalez could face up to 10 years in prison on the latest charge. He was released on a $50,000 bond, pending sentencing.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted East Hartford police with the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gustafson is prosecuting the case.
