    UPDATED: Storm leaves 1,600 without power in Stonington

    Stonington — As of 9:55 a.m., 1,555 Eversource customers, or just shy of 14 percent of the town was without power. In neighboring Westerly large sections of the town including downtown were without power.

    Stonington appears to have been the hardest town hit in the region with numerous roads blocked, countless trees down and some boats washed ashore.

    Police Capt. Todd Olson said no injuries have been reported. He says sections of main roads such as Route 27, North Main Street, Main Street in the borough, Pequot Trail in Pawcatuck and Al Harvey are all closed.

    Olson cautioned residents to avoid downed trees and wires.

    He said police are working with Eversource and highway crews to prioritize removal of trees to reopen roads. Extra police officers have been called in to work.

    Stonington and Westerly schools are also closed today due to widespread power outages in both towns.
