New London City Hall elevator on the fritz, options sought

New London – The more than 60-year-old elevator at City Hall has failed and will require replacement.

Because of public access concerns, the city has secured an alternate location for Monday’s City Council meeting. The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School Library at 36 Waller St.

Mayor Michael Passero said the elevator, which has required significant maintenance over the past 10 years, will require replacement. Options are being evaluated, he said.

The City Clerk’s Office and the Judge of Probate Office on the first floor of City Hall remain handicapped-accessible.

Upon request, those requiring elevator service will be able to meet with city staff on the first floor to address concerns and access city services. Anyone requiring the services of the Planning, Zoning and Community & Economic Development departments on the second floor should call (860) 447-5203, or the registrar of voters at (860) 447-5206. For services on the third floor, call the City Council’s Office at (860) 447-5202 or the mayor’s office, the mayor or chief administrative officer at (860) 447-5200.
