New London developer facing bribery charge in Rhode Island

New London — Prominent downtown developer and city resident Yehuda Amar is wanted in Rhode Island on the criminal charge of bribing a public official, local police say.

Amar, 70, of 195 Pequot Ave., was charged Friday by New London police with being a fugitive from justice — a charge linked to an active warrant for Yehuda’s arrest held by Rhode Island law enforcement officials. Details of the Rhode Island criminal charge have not yet been made public and officials from Rhode Island did not return messages from The Day seeking further information.

Records show Amar posted a $50,000 bond following his arrest in New London. He made a brief appearance Monday in New London Superior Court before Judge Hunchu Kwak. Amar, through his attorney Anthony C. Basilica, agreed to turn himself in to authorities in Rhode Island on Tuesday.

Amar, who confirmed he has business interests in Rhode Island among other states, declined to comment on the specifics of the Rhode Island case.

Amar is a well-known figure in New London having purchased and rehabilitated multiple Bank Street structures with his business partner. Those projects include the rehab of 123 Bank St., the former Olympic Sporting Goods and the former Royal Hotel and Ernie’s Café at 53-55 Bank St.

Amar has also completed projects at 147 Bank St. and 153 Bank St., the former Modern Electric. Amar and a partner recently purchased 78 State St.
