WHO: People like Ruth, a single mother with three children and a dog.

AGENCY: Jonnycake Center of Westerly, which provides food, social services and emergency assistance for those in crisis.

HER SITUATION: Ruth was employed but unable to afford all her bills. She has received assistance with finances, food and clothing that helped keep her on top of her bills, including emergency financial assistance for rent. The Jonnycake Center's Food Pantry provided food supplies for her family and dog, and she received vouchers for clothing, furniture and essential home goods from the center's thrift store. Ruth also was connected to other resources, including SNAP and health insurance. Ruth completed the center's Real Jobs Rhode Island program, which provides paid job training, leading to a new career that allows her to afford all her bills and spend more time with her family.

WHAT TO DONATE: Nonperishable food items, pet supplies, winter clothing, hats and gloves, underwear and socks, good-condition shoes, and games/activities/supplies for kids age 4-18.
