New London — Stuart Sharack of Waterford uses his metal detector Wednesday, hoping, he said, to find a big surprise at Ocean Beach Park in New London.

He also said he decided to go to the beach because it was a sunny day with temperatures above freezing, and for the solitude, since the beach would be mostly empty because of the Christmas holiday.

The weather is forecast to remain mild and relatively warm for the rest of the week.
