Rotella to seek reelection to state rep seat

Stonington -- Freshman state Rep. Kate Rotella, D-Stonington, has announced that she will seek reelection to the 43rd District seat this fall.

Rotella said she announced now because she wants to complete the fundraising she needs to qualify for public campaign financing before the hectic General Assembly session begins on Feb. 5.

Rotella need to collects 150 donations ranging from $5 to $250 and a total of $5,100 to qualify for the financing.

Rotella defeated Republican Shaun Mastroianni in November 2018 after nine-term Democratic incumbent Diana Urban decided not to seek reelection. The 43rd District is comprised of Stonington and North Stonington.

“It’s hard work but I have really enjoyed being our state representative,” Rotella said Monday when asked why she is seeking a second term. “I am so proud to serve my district and I feel like I’ve made a difference for us.”

Rotella served on the legislature’s influential Appropriations Committee as well as the education and internship committees.

During her first session, Rotella co-sponsored successful legislation that ensures Connecticut residents are guaranteed health insurance coverage for preexisting conditions.

Rotella said she wants to continue to work on budgetary, health insurance, education and economic development issues.

She said she has been able to work in a non-partisan fashion with other members of the General Assembly.

“It’s so important for us to show there’s dignity and respect in the office,” she said.
