Public invited to rally to support Sea Unicorns on Monday

Norwich — A public rally to support the Norwich Sea Unicorns will be held following Monday's news conference and meeting with U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, stadium vendors and businesses at the Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium.

Courtney and Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom announced Thursday they are extending an invitation to the public to rally in support of the team following the news conference. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the stadium, 14 Stott Ave.

Courtney is a founding member of the Congressional Task Force to Save Minor League Baseball. He joined several congressmen in introducing a resolution in the House on Tuesday to urge Major League Baseball to scrap a proposal to eliminate ties to 42 minor league teams, including the Sea Unicorns — formerly the Connecticut Tigers — and to cut the amateur baseball draft that feeds those teams in half, from 40 to 20 rounds.

Nystrom also is a member of the Mayoral Task Force to Save Minor League Baseball, a coalition of leaders from the 42 cities and towns slated to lose their affiliated minor league teams.
