Fundraising can begin to upgrade Norwich tennis courts

Norwich — The City Council on Monday gave the go-ahead to the city Recreation Department to begin a two-year effort to raise $400,000 to resurface the closed Armstrong Tennis Courts on Mohegan Road and perhaps upgrade other city tennis courts.

The council approved a plan by the Recreation Advisory Board to create an ad hoc committee of tennis enthusiasts to try to raise the money and to seek grants to resurface the rundown clay courts with either asphalt or concrete. Money raised will go into the Tennis Facilities Repairs and Improvements Project Account for “improving and maintaining the city’s tennis facilities, including, but not limited to, the Armstrong Tennis Courts.”

Other city courts are at the John B. Stanton School and Jenkins Park on Mechanic Street.
