New London — What better way to celebrate reading than with the famous Dr. Seuss character Cat in the Hat?

On Saturday, Mitchell College held its 19th annual Cat in the Hat Ball. The festivities included story time with a local author, live music, themed games and more.

Children listened as author Tish Rabe of Mystic read "The 100 Hats of the Cat in the Hat: Celebration of the 100th Day of School," following along on a giant screen. Rabe writes books for The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series.

Members of the Community Dance Ensemble performed a modern soul-style dance to the song "Rock My Soul." The group, under the direction of Maggie and Nancy Dennis, is with the Dance Extension based in New London and Waterford. The dancers, ages 10 to 17, audition for the ensemble and travel to perform at places like Disney World and also hold charity performances for hospitals and nursing homes.

The event was hosted by the college's Education Department.
