Mitchell College latest to announce switch to online classes

New London — Mitchell College classes are canceled through Monday and will be delivered online from Tuesday through at least March 29, interim Co-Presidents Catherine Wright and Mary-Jane McLaughlin said in an email to the college community early Thursday evening.

They said there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Mitchell, or in New London County, but they made several changes "out of an abundance of caution."

Students must leave their dorms by Saturday at noon. Wright and McLaughlin said this is not an end-of-year move-out, that the intention is for students to return to their residence halls. They also said all athletic activities and campus activities will be canceled through at least March 29.

Spring break was March 2-6, whereas Connecticut College is on its regularly scheduled spring break. Connecticut College President Katherine Bergeron announced Wednesday night that at the close of spring break, the college would transition to remote teaching until at least April 30.

Conn College's remote classes will begin March 25, but faculty and staff will continue to report to work as usual. All large lectures and events planned for the rest of the semester have been canceled, campus access is limited to college personnel and approved contractors, and the spring athletic season is canceled.

In Norwich, Three Rivers Community College closed to the public at 5 p.m. Thursday. Its spring break is March 16-22, and then classes will be online only. Connecticut State Colleges and Universities President Mark Ojakian instructed all employees who can to start working remotely.

The University of Connecticut is moving to online classes at the Storrs campus, all regional campuses — including Avery Point in Groton — and the School of Law beginning March 23. UConn expects this to be the case until at least April 6.

Effective Saturday, employees at all campuses are encouraged to work remotely if they can, and students are encouraged to remain at home or elsewhere after spring break.
