Third Coast Guard Academy cadet, among group on spring break trip to Spain, tests positive for COVID-19

A third Coast Guard Academy cadet, who traveled with six of his classmates to Spain over spring break, has tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus disease.

The 20-year-old male cadet, who has been self-isolating at home in Florida, was not showing symptoms of the virus, but got tested after his classmate, who was also on the trip, tested positive.

Another 20-year-old male cadet from Florida was the first to test positive, followed by a 20-year-old female cadet from the Virgin Islands. The cadets are all in their third year at the academy and have been quarantining at their respective homes since returning from their trip earlier this month.

All cadets are required to inform the academy if they test positive for COVID-19. As of Friday afternoon, none of the other cadets on the trip to Spain had reported testing positive.

The academy cautioned all cadets, before they left for spring break on March 9, not to travel or have a layover in any affected countries, which at the time did not include Spain, and also reviewed cadets’ travel itineraries before they left.

Cadets have not been on campus for several weeks, given the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s unknown when they will be able to return to the academy. The earliest that could happen is April 30, but that is subject to change. Rear Adm. Bill Kelly, superintendent at the academy, said this week that he is looking at the possibility of bringing back a group or groups of cadets, as opposed to the whole student body returning at the same time.
