Groton Girl Scouts earn Gold Awards

Ashley Morrell and Jessica Schafer of Troop 63815 in Groton recently earned Gold Awards.

The Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest honor, is granted to scouts in grades 9-12 who exhibit leadership and citizen skills through the development of a sustainable community project. Recipients must conduct at least 80 hours of research to assess community needs and develop a project that addresses those needs on a long-term basis.

Morrell, an ice skater, created a video to promote ice skating safety, with links to educate viewers on the importance of safe practices such as properly lacing skates and wearing protective clothing and gear.

Schafer created a storytime series in American Sign Language to promote awareness of the language in the hearing community. The seasonal stories, available for use to local schools and groups, include vocabulary words and a Go Fish game in ASL to practice signs.
