Paddle craft rally planned Saturday on Mystic River

Mystic — The Downtown Mystic Merchants and Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will present Floatchella, a pop-up paddle craft rally on the Mystic River, Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The rally will take place north of the drawbridge on the west side of the river, and outside the channel. All forms of paddle craft are welcome, including kayaks, paddleboards and canoes. Lifejackets are required and motorized vessels are asked to stay clear of the event.

Participants will be asked to wear masks and observe social distancing while on the water and on land.

The event will feature music from DJ Mello and I Anbassa & The Word Sound Power Movement playing on the floating stage tethered to land on Gravel Street.

The two organizations ask that paddlers launch from one of four points: under the Interstate 95 bridge on River Road, on Isham Street, on Water Street across from the Daniel Packer Inne or on Williams Beach at the Ocean Community YMCA. Volunteers will be available to assist people and will be accepting donations for the two organizations.

Anyone who would like to support the event by making a contribution can send it through the online money-sending service Venmo to @Floatchella with the code 0929. Anyone who donates at least $20 will receive their choice of one item of official Floatchella merchandise. Sponsorships opportunities are available at $100, $250 and $500, as well.

The rain date for the event is Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
