Ledyard Town Council approves dog leash ordinance

Ledyard — After being referred back to the Administration Committee last month, the Town Council voted unanimously Wednesday to approve an ordinance regulating dog leashing on town properties.

The first public hearing for the ordinance was held in February, with residents speaking both for and against the proposed ordinance, which would require dogs and other domesticated animals to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet while on town property. That includes sidewalks, streets and school and historic district properties, as well as athletic fields and playgrounds.

Violators would be subject to a $92 fine and immediate removal from the property; they also may be banned from entering town property with their animal in the future. Ledyard Police Department and the town animal control officer would be empowered to take enforcement action.

The council also hosted a public hearing in July but elected to send the ordinance back to the Administration Committee to take into account feedback from that night's meeting.

Councilor Mary McGrattan said the Conservation Commission is developing a list of approved leash-free areas within their properties that would be added to the ordinance and revised as necessary.
