Preston — All students here will attend class remotely on Monday and Tuesday due to a positive COVID-19 case.

Cohort A students, who would normally be in school Monday and Tuesday, will stay home and participate in remote learning. Wednesday is already a virtual learning day to allow for cleaning before the second half of students typically attend in-person class Thursday and Friday.  

“We’re going to review all of the details of the case and determine Monday or Tuesday whether we’ll return on Thursday," Superintendent Roy Seitsinger said Sunday. Contact tracing is taking place and the school system is consulting with the Uncas Health District about returning to in-person instruction.

Meanwhile, the school system has cautioned parents to be prepared for a possible shift to full virtual instruction for at least the next 14 days.

The infected person was last in school Friday and is now home in self-isolation for 14 days. Family members have been instructed to self-quarantine and get tested.

Meanwhile, Steve Mansfield, the director of health for the Ledge Light Health District, which serves nine municipalities from Old Lyme to Stonington, said Sunday there have been 45 new positive cases in those communities since Friday with most among young people. 

Mansfield cautioned that if cases in the region continue to increase, restrictions could be reinstated.  He said that while people are tired of the pandemic, they need to remain vigilant.
