Literary Types: Baltic's Zinavage a force for politics and the military

Wilfred Zinavage possesses a passion for politics, the military and social injustice. He was an enlisted naval officer for over 20 years, culminating in his book titled “Deployment.”

Using poetic language, his story is a true account of crew members and their experience on a nuclear submarine during the Cold War.

The book has been considered by movie moguls for its conversion into a film.

His newest book, “Challenges,” is an intriguing collection of lists, schedules, and activities documented by staff members of the former Norwich State Hospital. The book reveals confidential information about happenings in a state institution.

Norwich Hospital opened in 1904 and closed its doors in 1995, turning people suffering from mental illness out on the streets, rendering some sick and homeless. The property has subsequently been abandoned, with some buildings destroyed and others retained for their architecture.

As a former candidate for lieutenant governor, Zinavage believes the property should be used for a theme park, which would bring in business and people together.

Zinavage is also the author of “The Zinavage Legacy,” a compilation of letters revealing hardships and obstacles overcome.

Fred Zinavage is from Baltic. His inspiration for the three published books are his two uncles, one of whom spent time in Norwich State Hospital; the other in the military.

    Lisa Shasha lives in Norwich.
