The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Ida Lewis was performing Aids to Navigation work on a buoy Tuesday in Fishers Island Sound near Latimer Reef Light.
The 55-foot tall cylindrical lighthouse was built in 1884 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2006.
The 175-foot Ida Lewis is the lead ship in the Keeper Class of coastal buoy tender cutters, and was named after a notable female lighthouse keeper of the 19th century.
